I have a permanent pain at the top of my left pelvis. It's not so much a pain as a burning sensation. It's located where a whole bunch of tendons and other plumbing pass through a channel. Is there likely to be a bursa between that lot and the bone and could this be bursitis? I'd be interested to hear from bursitis sufferers

I have trochanteric bursitis, which is sheer agony at times. I first felt pain in June, and wrongly assumed it must be from my hip. It bothered me while we were in Portugal on holiday, even to swim, so I mentioned it at my August appointment at the hospital. They did X-rays & scans, which is how I got my diagnosis. I had a steroid injection that day, and another one two weeks later as my consultant felt it was needed. This helped for a short while, but at present it is really painful - to walk/go up a step/raise my leg etc. Neither can I lie on that side. For the moment I`m taking anti-inflamms, but have to go back to the hospital next month.

The only other place I`ve had a bursa is behind my knee, but this burst so was quite horrible, but at least it cleared up quickly, unlike this one.

No idea if you have a bursa at the top of your pelvis, but then again, I didn`t know you could get one where mine is either.

I have bursitis also and the pain you mention sounds like the pain i get, although mine is more around the hip area. I would get it checked out at the hospital at your next appointment or ring them for an urgent appointment. The pain is bad, i know. I also had a steroid injection in to the bursa and the relief only lasts for a short time.

I also had pysio but it didn't help much.

Good luck with getting this sorted.

Thanks Shirley & Kathleen. From what you say I think that this must be bursitis. I have pointed it out on successive visits to rheumy nurses and consultants but to little effect. I think they think it is a minor side effect to the main condition, that the existing drugs will address.

Paul

I had bursitis in both hips earlier in the summer. It was agony to walk. I soldiered on without mentioning it to anyone. I had a RA appointment in August and told the Consultant. He immediately examined me and said no problem he could treat it. He told me to hop up on the couch and went and fetched a nurse. He then told me he was going to inject each area with steroids. I thought "brilliant". He then said he needed to wiggle the needle around to find the exact spot the bursitis is. It was excruciating. I cried and shouted. I then had to turn over on my other side to get that injected and the first side hurt like hell lying on it. I cried and shouted again. I am not adverse to pain as I have had a knee replacement but boy did that hurt. When I went to go out of the room, I realised the door had been open the whole time and everyone in the waiting room heard me shouting. They all smiled sympathetically as I hobbled out.

I did not sleep that night as the pain in both hips was awful. However, within 24 hours the pain had vanished as had the bursitis. That was August and it is now mid November and I am still pain free in my hips. He obviously targeted the bursitis well and although it was terrible having the injections done, I cannot tell you the relief to be pain free. I would definitely go through it again.

Hope I have not put you off, but I wanted to explain that if the Consultant gets it right when he does inject you, it can work miracles.

I would speak to your Consultant again or even your GP as I know they can do steroid injections as well.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Jackie
